It must be a term from up north because the only other thing beside sandwhich/sub down here is a Po' boy. (and that's more Louisiana than anything)

^Dialect. Different vernacular regions of our stage-four country (Demographic Transition Model) use different terms.
Take AP Human Geography if your school offers it. Awesome class. 'Course, you won't have Mrs. Chiang as your teacher.

I only know what a grinder is because of Seinfeld.
Here on the west coast though, we call them "sandwhiches"..Not sure if you all have heard that term, but we like to call things by their real name.
(It's soda, NOT pop)
